Cowboy Romance

Year: 1992
Duration: 6:25

Collaboration with writer Scott Davenport. This work juxtaposes film and text, both appropriated, and layers them through a series of simple video effects. My interest here was to create a kind of visual and aural density in which the original elements both remain recognizable and become transformed. The piece is part of a series dealing with the portrayal of male roles in poplar media. The work is both an homage to Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone and a critique of the tendency of much contemporary cinema towards a "pornography of violence", with the treatment pushing the material towards an intense climax which never arrives. Produced in part at the Experimental TV Center. This video was screened at the Museum of Modern Art in NY, the Banff Center for the Arts, BC, and the NW Film Study Center, Portland, OR.
